I really enjoy reading Seth Godin’s daily blog each morning.

One of his blog posts that I particularly resonated with was titled Impossible:

“… Our days are filled with the path to future skills, tasks and commitments that we believe we can’t possibly take on. We’ve seduced ourselves into believing that we’re not born with the talent, or that the obstacles to doing the work are just too great.

In fact, it’s more likely that we’ve simply decided that the work isn’t worth the effort.

Or the fear is too much to bear.

But it’s hardly impossible.

We just don’t care enough.”

That final sentence really intrigued me: “We just don’t care enough.”

Over the last 12 months I have been working on a podcast to explore a particular question that I continually see popping up and waging its power. I have navigated this question myself at different times in life, addressed it as a leader and frequently come across it while coaching others …

“What if it doesn’t work …?”

“What if it doesn’t work?” is a question and thought that can have so much influence over people’s choices and prevent the pursuit of change. On the flip-side however, there are then changes or scenarios that people pursue irrespective of the risk involved and it’s these type of scenarios that I have been exploring in my interviews – left-field career choices, transformational change, taking action on ideas that no one else thought would work.

With COVID reigniting personal change for many people, I’m interested in hearing what it was that enabled people to push past the noise of well-meaning advice or their own fear in order to pursue a change.

I would love to hear your thoughts – what do you think it takes to push past the risk that something won’t work and still try it anyway? Is it as simple as just needing to care enough?
